St. Joseph’s Future FAQs

Following the transition to the new Comox Valley Hospital, we have been waiting to hear about plans for the St. Joseph’s site. On January 16th, 2019, the Ministry of Health announced a major investment in seniors care beds in our community. This includes some exciting new changes soon to come to the Views at St. Joseph’s.

With so many exciting changes happening in our local healthcare system, we would like to take this opportunity to address some questions we have been hearing from the community.  If you have further questions, please contact us.

Who are we and what do we do?

Comox Valley Healthcare Foundation (CVHF), formerly St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation, is an independent not-for-profit organization that raises funds to enhance local healthcare where government funding ends. Since being established in 1993, and thanks to the generosity of donors, CVHF has raised over $14 million to fund:

  • Vital Medical Equipment/Technology
  • St. Joseph’s Residential Care Support
  • Staff Education
  • Local Health Initiatives
Where is the Foundation located?

Comox Valley Healthcare Foundation’s office is located in the lobby of the new Comox Valley Hospital. We continue to work closely with healthcare partners throughout the community from this great new space. You are welcome to visit us weekdays between 8:30 am and 4 pm, or give us a call at (250) 331-5957 x65435. We would love to see you!

What is happening to The Views at St. Joseph’s?

Ownership of The Views at St. Joseph’s is transferring to Providence Residential and Community Care Services Society, or PRCC. The transition of ownership is targeted for completion on April 1, 2019. The Comox Valley Healthcare Foundation continues to support ongoing enhancement of care at that site. Any donations designated for St. Joseph’s will continue to be held by The Foundation and will support the project at St. Joseph’s. Our Foundation will continue to raise money for the exciting new development. You can be assured that your gift will be directed as you originally intended.

Who is Providence Residential and Community Care Society (PRCC)?

PRCC was established in January 2017 by Providence Health Care, a faith-based organization in Vancouver that provides acute, long-term care, assisted-living, hospice, and community care. PHC, PRCC and St. Joseph’s have very similar mission, vision, and values and like St. Joseph’s, PRCC is a Catholic, not-for-profit organization with a mandate to provide compassionate care for seniors.

What is planned for the St. Joseph’s site?

The Ministry of Health recently announced the addition of 31 new residential care beds and 4 respite beds in addition to the existing 116 beds at the Views at St. Joseph’s. This is the wonderful opportunity the community has been waiting for to redevelop the Views at St. Joseph’s into a community campus with various levels of housing, support options for seniors as well as a dementia village.

Why should I donate to something the government should be funding?

Did you know that there isn’t a BC hospital that is fully government-funded? Modest government funding is nowhere near enough to satisfy good healthcare levels in our province or in the Comox Valley. Hospitals and care facilities are expensive to operate but crucial for our quality of life. That’s where the Foundation, and your donation, comes in — to fill the financial gap left by the government to meet the Comox Valley’s unique healthcare needs, and support the delivery of crucial healthcare services right here in our community.

Can I leave a gift in my will to Comox Valley Healthcare Foundation?

Yes. More Comox Valley residents are choosing the option of leaving a planned gift in their will to support quality healthcare in our community. For more information on leaving a planned gift, contact us.
