Learn why a new ultrasound fleet matters.
Q & A with Alex Melanson
Medical Imaging Manager for North Vancouver Island
Join us as we hear from one of our healthcare colleagues about the need for this equipment and how it will make a real difference in our community. Alex sees firsthand how ultrasound technology is used in every stage of life and why it’s time for an upgrade at our local hospital.
Q: How often is ultrasound used in your department?
Alex: Every single day. Ultrasound is one of the most frequently used tools in our department — and in a patient’s healthcare journey. People start getting ultrasounds before they’re even born, during pregnancy. Then throughout life, it’s used for everything from diagnosing injuries and guiding treatments, to cancer screenings and post-treatment follow-ups. It’s one of the most versatile, non-invasive diagnostic tools we have.
Q: How many patients rely on this equipment?
Alex: It adds up quickly. Each ultrasound machine can perform more than 2,500 scans a year, depending on how many staff we have scheduled. That means they’re running constantly, so they get a lot of wear and tear, and over time, it affects how reliably and quickly we can perform scans.
Q: Why is the current ultrasound suite in need of replacement?
Alex: The equipment we’re using now has served this community incredibly well. Most ultrasound machines have a lifespan of about 7 years, and we’re now into year 8. They’ve been absolute workhorses, but we’re seeing the limits. Technology changes fast, and our machines are now outdated. Newer systems offer better image quality, faster processing, and more advanced features that improve diagnosis and comfort for patients.
Q: What would a new ultrasound fleet mean for the hospital and the community?
Alex: It would mean faster care, more accurate diagnostics, less stress for patients, and better working conditions for staff. It means being able to serve more people, more efficiently — with the most advanced, up-to-date technology available. As our community grows, so do the demands on our department.
Q: What would a new ultrasound fleet mean for you personally?
Alex: It would mean the world. My mom, a cancer survivor, goes in for regular re-checks using ultrasound. That scan gives us peace of mind — it tells us whether things are stable, or if we need to act. I see the same thing every day with our patients: that moment of clarity that comes from a clear, accurate scan. Whether it's good news or not, having answers matters. And the better our equipment, the faster and clearer those answers can be.
Q: What would you say to someone thinking about supporting this initiative?
Alex: I’d say thank you. Thank you for caring. We know that better, faster diagnostic care is something many in our community are asking for. Supporting this campaign means helping make that a reality—providing your neighbours, friends, and family with the best chance for timely, accurate care right here at home.
Facing moments of uncertainty while waiting for medical answers can be difficult. That’s why updating and improving our hospital’s diagnostic equipment means so much—it helps bring quicker, clearer answers and greater peace of mind.
“It’s not just about fixing broken bones — it’s about restoring our spirits, helping us return to the things we love, and supporting us every step of the way.”
