Chris Lamont's Story

I never thought I’d fall in love with BMX racing at 55, but here I am — an elementary school teacher since 2000, the previous owner of Comox Valley Curb Appeal, a dad to two incredible daughters — chasing the same rush I had as a kid growing up in the Comox Valley. In 2024, I made a decision to try something new, something just for me. I joined the Coal Hills BMX Club and the energy, the community, the pure joy of flying down that track — it made me feel like a teenager again. But over the summer, that joy came to a sudden halt. One wrong move and I went down — hard. I knew right away it was bad. My hand was a mess, my ribs hurt to breathe, my hip was swollen to the size of a softball, and both shoulders were screaming. It wasn’t just a tumble — it was a full-stop. From the moment I arrived at Comox Valley Hospital, I felt looked after. The Emergency team and Medical Imaging technologists quickly assessed the damage — cracked ribs, a hematoma in my hip, and confirmation that my hand was in worse shape than I’d hoped. Two fingers needed to be sewn up, one knuckle had to be replaced, and a dislocated finger needed repair. I’m still in awe of the skill and precision of the doctors who put me back together. I am grateful for their compassionate care. Grateful for the technology right here in our community. And grateful to still have the chance to get back on my bike.
