Generous Donation Funds New Project to Improve Brain Health

This winter, Jim McCaffery visited the Foundation office to make a generous donation, in memory of his wife Frankie, to support Geriatric Specialty Services delivered by Island Health. In conversation, Jim shared his deep gratitude for the care Frankie received from Occupational Therapists and his wish that his donation support the care they provide in our community. In Frankie’s honour, Jim’s gift has launched a new Cognitive Stimulation Therapy Project to improve brain health and quality of life for people who have mild-moderate dementia.

This 14-week program, delivered by Occupational Therapists, is based on evidence that shows improved focus, language and communication skills in participants. It also includes the opportunity for the caregivers of participants to meet over coffee while their loved ones are participating in the program. For both program participants and caregivers, the program is helping to create connection and support so that no one feels they are facing a diagnosis of dementia, or the care of their loved one, on their own.

Laurel Steed and Alison Ritchie, the Occupational Therapists running the program, have shared their gratitude for Jim’s generous gift, stating “being able to start this program… it means everything. We are so thankful to Jim and being able to work with our amazing program participants.”
