The Comox Valley Healthcare Foundation (CVHF) is acknowledging another year of support from Emterra Environmental, whose long-running curbside recycling initiative continues to translate everyday environmental action into meaningful healthcare investment.
Through the Make Your Contribution at the Curb™ program, Emterra contributes $1 for every tonne of recyclables collected through curbside pickup. Over the past 12 years, this initiative has now generated more than $35,000 in support of local healthcare priorities.
Since its launch in 2013, the program has also helped divert over 34,000 tonnes of material from landfill—demonstrating the significant environmental and community benefits that can be achieved when residents participate in recycling programs at scale.
To put that into perspective, this represents nearly 7,000 truckloads of recyclable material diverted from waste streams and reinvested into both environmental sustainability and community health.
Emterra’s partnership with CVHF is rooted in a deeply personal connection to healthcare, following an employee’s experience with cancer. That experience helped inspire the company’s decision to direct program proceeds toward strengthening local health services.
Dave Ross, North Island Operations Manager with Emterra Environmental, says the initiative continues to show the power of small, consistent actions.
“Every time someone puts out their recycling, they’re contributing to something much larger,” said Ross. “It’s a simple act that, over time, helps build stronger communities. We’re proud to continue supporting that connection between environmental responsibility and local care.”
This year, the program has contributed a further $2,135, adding to more than a decade of cumulative impact.
Avry Janes, Co-Executive Director Comox Valley Healthcare Foundation, says the partnership continues to resonate strongly as demand for healthcare services grows across the region.
“As our community expands, ensuring access to high-quality care close to home becomes even more important,” said Janes. “Emterra’s commitment reflects a powerful blend of environmental leadership and genuine community care. We are deeply appreciative of their continued investment in local health.”
A cheque presentation marking this year’s contribution brought together representatives from Emterra Environmental, local government, and the CVHF to recognize the ongoing success of the program and its shared impact across the region.
