Every Tonne Counts: Emterra’s Recycling Program Boosts Healthcare in the Comox Valley
The Comox Valley Healthcare Foundation (CVHF) is once again proud to recognize Emterra Environmental for its longstanding commitment to local healthcare. Through its innovative Make Your Contribution at the Curb™ program, Emterra has contributed $32,400 to the Foundation over the past 11 years — all thanks to the power of curbside recycling.
Through this unique initiative, $1 is donated for every tonne of recyclables collected at the curb, challenging residents to recycle more while directly supporting healthcare in their own community. Since 2013, this partnership has diverted over 32,000 tonnes of recyclable material from landfills — and turned it into meaningful healthcare support in the Comox Valley.
That’s the equivalent of more than 6,400 full trucks of recyclables diverted from the landfill — thanks to community recycling efforts.
Emterra’s decision to direct proceeds from the program to CVHF was inspired by a deeply personal story: an Emterra employee’s experience with cancer led the company to support healthcare services that touch the lives of so many in the region.
“This program allows everyday actions to create extraordinary outcomes,” said Dave Ross, Emterra’s North Island Operations Manager. “By simply recycling, residents of Courtenay and Comox are helping build a stronger healthcare system for their families and neighbours. We’re proud of this program and the impact it continues to make.”
This year’s donation of $2,100 adds to Emterra’s total contribution and continues to demonstrate how environmental stewardship and community health can go hand-in-hand.
“As our region grows, so do the demands on our healthcare system,” said Susan Auchterlonie, Comox Valley Healthcare Foundation Board President. “Emterra’s partnership not only reflects their dedication to environmental leadership, but also their compassion and care for the well-being of families across the Valley. We are deeply grateful for their ongoing support.”
The May 22 cheque presentation brought together Emterra representatives, local municipal leaders, healthcare leadership, and Foundation staff to celebrate this enduring partnership and their shared commitment to creating a healthier, more sustainable future.
