AI-Enhanced MRI Technology Advances Local Imaging Services
Thanks to the generosity and vision of one dedicated community member and friend of the Healthcare Foundation, patients in the Comox Valley are now experiencing faster, clearer, and more comfortable MRI scans with the arrival of advanced artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted imaging technology at Comox Valley Hospital.
This transformative gift represents an important step forward in access to innovative diagnostic tools, helping to shape a more modern and effective healthcare system for the region.
Long-time resident of the Comox Valley and cherished friend of the Comox Valley Healthcare Foundation, Frank Carter is deeply passionate about improving local healthcare, and his support for his community continues to leave a lasting mark. This gift is just one of the many ways he is helping to shape a healthier future for the Comox Valleyโhis ongoing commitment is advancing access, innovation, and care across the region.
The passion and generosity of community members like Frank are fundamental to bringing world-class care closer to home. His unwavering commitment ensures that families and individuals can access advanced medical technology without having to travel far, supporting a healthier, stronger Comox Valley.
โFrank is ensuring that our hospital has access to the latest technology available,โ said Rhonda Stevens, Co-Executive Director of the Comox Valley Healthcare Foundation. โHis commitment to healthcare and to the people of this community is truly inspiring. This is just one example of how his support is making a lasting impact.โ
Alexandra Melanson, Manager of Medical Imaging for North Vancouver Island, shared how the technology is already making a difference.
โThe Deep Resolve software is truly a game changer,โ Melanson said. โWeโve seen up to a 40% reduction in scan times, all while improving image quality. That means faster, more accurate diagnostics and the ability to serve more patients in our community. Itโs a win-win that helps us deliver world-class care right here in the Comox Valley.โ
The AI-powered software supports faster diagnostic imaging while enhancing image clarity, helping clinicians make timely and well-informed decisions. With the integration of AI, the Medical Imaging team can scan patients more efficiently, increase daily patient capacity, and reduce wait timesโall while improving patient comfort and experience.
MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is a critical diagnostic tool used to create detailed images of internal organs, soft tissues, and joints. Traditionally, these scans can be lengthy and challenging for some patients, especially those with anxiety or discomfort during imaging. The new AI-enhanced system shortens scan times from 15โ30 minutes to as little as 5โ10 minutes for many procedures, including scans of the spine, knee, and shoulder.
โThese shorter scan times make a real difference for patients,โ Melanson explained. โItโs especially important for those who experience anxiety in enclosed spaces. Weโre seeing fewer patients needing sedatives and completing more scans quickly and comfortably.โ
Beyond improving patient comfort, this technology enables better use of hospital resources. Reduced scan durations allow staff to care for more patients daily, improving access to timely diagnostics and supporting better health outcomes.
As one of several hospitals in the Island Health region adopting AI-enhanced MRI technology, Comox Valley Hospital is proud to be at the forefront of medical imaging innovation in British Columbia. This progress would not have been possible without the communityโs ongoing supportโand in particular, the vision and generosity of Frank Carter who is helping to pave the way for a healthier future.
โThis kind of gift elevates care across the entire system,โ said Stevens. โItโs an investment in every patient who walks through our hospital doors today and for many years to come. We are truly grateful.โ
