AI-Enhanced MRI Technology Advances Local Imaging Services

Long-time resident of the Comox Valley and cherished friend of the Comox Valley Healthcare Foundation, Frank Carter is deeply passionate about improving local healthcare, and his support for his community continues to leave a lasting mark. Alexandra Melanson, Manager of Medical Imaging for North Vancouver Island, shared how the technology is already making a difference.

“The Deep Resolve software is truly a game changer,” Melanson said. “We’ve seen up to a 40% reduction in scan times, all while improving image quality. That means faster, more accurate diagnostics and the ability to serve more patients in our community. It’s a win-win that helps us deliver world-class care right here in the Comox Valley.”

The AI-powered software supports faster diagnostic imaging while enhancing image clarity, helping clinicians make timely and well-informed decisions. With the integration of AI, the Medical Imaging team can scan patients more efficiently, increase daily patient capacity, and reduce wait times—all while improving patient comfort and experience.

MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is a critical diagnostic tool used to create detailed images of internal organs, soft tissues, and joints. Traditionally, these scans can be lengthy and challenging for some patients, especially those with anxiety or discomfort during imaging. The new AI-enhanced system shortens scan times from 15–30 minutes to as little as 5–10 minutes for many procedures, including scans of the spine, knee, and shoulder.

“These shorter scan times make a real difference for patients,” Melanson explained. “It’s especially important for those who experience anxiety in enclosed spaces. We’re seeing fewer patients needing sedatives and completing more scans quickly and comfortably.”

Beyond improving patient comfort, this technology enables better use of hospital resources. Reduced scan durations allow staff to care for more patients daily, improving access to timely diagnostics and supporting better health outcomes.
