The Power of Community in Cancer Care

At its heart, a strong community is one that cares for one another. In the Comox Valley, that spirit of generosity is helping make a meaningful difference for people facing cancer. Together, our community is enhancing care at the Comox Valley Hospital, bringing comfort, innovation, and hope closer to home.

Every year, thousands of cancer treatments take place at the Comox Valley Hospital. Behind each appointment is a person facing uncertainty, a family offering support, and a healthcare team delivering compassionate care. While cancer journeys are never easy, our community is helping ensure that patients have access to enhanced care and comfort at our local hospital.

One example is the hospital's new state-of-the-art mammography unit. Community support helped fund this advanced diagnostic technology, improving access to high-quality breast imaging and supporting earlier, more accurate diagnoses for patients across the region.

Donor support has also helped provide specialized equipment that improves the experience of care. A vein finder assists clinicians in locating veins more easily, reducing discomfort and anxiety during treatment, while specialized oncology treatment chairs provide greater comfort for patients and enable care teams to respond more effectively to patients’ needs.

Each new piece of equipment offers significant benefit, but together they represent something much greater: a community committed to ensuring people facing cancer receive the best care possible without having to travel far from home.

"As a community, we accomplish far more together than any one donor or organization could achieve alone," says Rhonda Stevens, Co-Executive Director of the Comox Valley Healthcare Foundation. "Every contribution helps improve care, comfort, and the patient experience, demonstrating the remarkable impact of community generosity."

This is a story of collective impact. It belongs to the neighbours who support fundraising events, the volunteers who give their time, the businesses and community organizations that invest in local healthcare, and the many individuals whose generosity—whether large or small—helps make enhanced cancer care possible.
